Welcome to Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2024

A celebration of apprenticeships as the cornerstone of Scotland’s Skills Generation initiative.

This year, we unite under the theme of “Skills Generation,” emphasising the pivotal role of apprenticeships in generating opportunities for individuals to thrive in both life and work, addressing the skills employers need now and in the future, and driving growth for Scotland’s economy.

Apprenticeships: Powering Scotland's Skills Generation

In a rapidly evolving landscape where skills are the currency of success, apprenticeships emerge as catalysts for Scotland’s Skills Generation agenda. By equipping individuals with the skills employers need, apprenticeships not only bridge the gap between education and employment but also empower businesses to thrive in a changing world.

Key Benefits of Apprenticeships:

  • Talent Development: Apprenticeships empower individuals to gain valuable skills and experience, unlocking doors to rewarding careers and lifelong success.
  • Workforce Resilience: Employers benefit from a skilled and adaptable workforce, equipped to navigate evolving industry landscapes and drive innovation.
  • Economic Growth: Investing in homegrown talent through apprenticeships stimulates economic growth, enhances competitiveness, and fosters a thriving business ecosystem.

The statistics speak volumes about the impact of apprenticeships on both individuals and businesses:

For Employers:

  • Diverse Participation: There are around 12,000 apprentice employers in Scotland, with over 90% being small to medium enterprises (SMEs), showcasing the accessibility and inclusivity of apprenticeship programs.
  • Fair Wages: Over 80% of apprentice employers pay at least the real Living Wage, emphasizing the commitment to fair compensation and employee well-being.
  • Enhanced Productivity: A staggering 83% of employers report improved productivity through apprenticeships, demonstrating the tangible benefits of investing in workforce development.

For Apprentices:

  • Successful Transitions: 91% of apprentices remain in work or employment after completing their apprenticeships, indicating the effectiveness of these programmes in facilitating smooth transitions into the workforce.
  • Career Progression: Over 80% of those who completed a Modern Apprenticeship progressed to better job opportunities, underscoring the role of apprenticeships as stepping stones to fulfilling careers.
  • Wellbeing and Prosperity: Apprentice wellbeing surpasses that of the general population, highlighting the positive impact of structured learning and on-the-job experience.
  • Financial Stability: Modern Apprentices earn up to 52% more compared to non-completers, illustrating the financial rewards and long-term prospects associated with completing apprenticeship programs.
