This year’s National Apprenticeship Week (NAW2021) takes place from 8th to 14th February 2021.

This year, NAW aims to recognise and celebrate how employers, apprentices and training providers have stepped up to the challenge during this unprecedented time. As part of this theme, Babington will be showcasing how our apprentices have helped businesses and employers to adapt, grow and build during a difficult year.

Life as a Business Admin Apprentice

Meet James Schofield, an Inventory Coordinator at IC Blue Limited in Leeds. James is studying a Business Administrator Level 3 apprenticeship with us.

Hello James! Can you tell us about the apprenticeship are you completing and what your day-to-day tasks involve?

I am completing the Business Administration Level 3 apprenticeship. On a day-to-day basis, I start off by filling out my booking forms for the new post, then I log into my OneFile (where my apprenticeship tasks are sent to me) and start to complete out the tasks that I have been sent.

How has COVID-19 effected your apprenticeship experience?

As I am counted as an essential worker it has not really affected me as much as others. However, it has stopped me from having face to face conversations with everyone. It is also stopping me from being able to connect with and get to know the other people within the company.

How has the training helped to build your skills?

So far, it has helped me form professional emails and to pay more attention to detail!

How do you think apprenticeships are helping businesses to succeed during this difficult time?

I think they are massively helping business to grow as apprentices have a massive willingness to learn. This means that once they have finished their apprenticeship, they will fit into the business perfectly and will have the skills needed to help the business succeed.

What progression opportunities do you have now because of your apprenticeship training?

I have a greater chance of becoming successful in this type of industry because of this apprenticeship. I also have a circle of colleagues within the company who are willing to help me learn, as well as the people at Babington, so all my questions and queries can be answered.

How has your apprenticeship helped you to adapt, grow and build during a difficult year?

When I started my apprenticeship in December, the company had already put measures in place for COVID-19. Doing an apprenticeship during the pandemic has helped me learn how to become more independent (as face to face communication has decreased) and how to work effectively in stressful situations.

Would you consider recommending apprenticeships to others? If so, why?

I would recommend the apprenticeship! Everyone you talk to is supportive, helpful and gives you answers to any questions that you have. An apprenticeship also helps you get into the type of industry you want to be in, and it helps you fully understand the job whilst working towards a qualification.

Do you have any other comments to support National Apprenticeship Week 2021?

Just always look to the future and take what steps can you to make it the best you can!
