What is the AAT qualification?
AAT is the UK’s leading qualification and membership body for accounting technicians, with around 130,000 members in more than 90 countries.
There are three levels to study with AAT, ranging from introductory to advanced. This means that whatever your previous knowledge and experience, we have a qualification level suitable for you to start with.
A career in accounting
Accounting professionals play a fundamental role in most organisations, and a career in accounting can offer you great job prospects. Members of AAT are ambitious and focused, occupying senior, well-rewarded positions with thousands of employers around the world.
If you have ambitions to go into a senior accounting role, AAT is the ideal first step towards further qualifications such as CIMA and ACCA. Completing AAT even gives you exemptions from certain modules on the route to becoming a Chartered Accountant.
The full qualification is considered equivalent to the first year of an academic degree, but at a fraction of the cost of university education. So becoming AAT qualified makes sense as both a smart career move, and a sound financial choice.

Case study: AAT member in 10 months
Billy Dwyer began studying towards the AAT level 2 Certificate in June 2014. Only 10 months later, he completed level 4, becoming
an Affiliate Member. We asked him about his experience.
How did you do it in so little time?
“Really, I think it boils down to how attentive
your tutor is to your needs. My learning style is very hot and cold so I might not require any help for weeks on end, but then when I need help I want it quite intensively. So typically I would send an email, then another email, then call-up Patricia (Billy’s tutor) and talk with her for half an hour or so.
The impressive thing about Patricia was that she was always available (including Sundays – sorry!) when I needed her so any obstacles that stood in my way could be easily surmounted. Also, moral support is really important when you are studying at home. Patricia was excellent in this area and was always very encouraging.”
Why did you choose AAT?
“I had done several different jobs in the past and was looking for a career, rather than just a job. Accountancy looked like a good bet (most businesses and organisations have this function) and AAT felt like the natural starting point for someone who, like me, doesn’t have a background in finance.”
