AAT Levels and courses

AAT qualifications span three levels: Level 2, Level 3, and Level 4 – each of which takes around a year to complete. There’s also Bookkeeping, which is a short course that takes certain subjects from Level 2 to create a Bookkeeping qualification, and can be completed in 6 months.

You don’t need any previous qualifications or accountancy experience to begin studying AAT – though with certain experience you will be able to begin studying at the higher levels.

AAT Certificate in Accounting - Level 2

If you’re new to accountancy and finance, looking to change your career into accountancy or have previously worked in an accounts department this level is ideal for you.

You’ll learn a wide range of key accounting skills, including double-entry bookkeeping and basic costing as well as accountancy related business skills and personal skills. You will gain practical, real-world accounting and finance skills, with the freedom to study flexibly, from anywhere. Roles that individuals would be eligible for after this course include: Accounts Administrator, Tax Assistant, and Trainee Accounts Technician.

Specialise in bookkeeping

AAT Certificate in Bookkeeping - Level 2

This entry-level qualification gives you the skills needed to embark on a career as a bookkeeper, as well as an industry-recognised qualification and foundations for exploring further in accountancy. You don’t need any previous accounting experience or qualifications to begin studying, so this is an ideal way to dip your toe into the world of accounting.

By completing this qualification, individuals gain knowledge and confidence in areas such as: completing double-entry bookkeeping, preparing and processing invoices and credit notes, balancing a 3-column analysed cash book, processing ledger transactions and extracting trial balances. Roles that individuals would be eligible for after this course include: Bookkeeper, Payroll Administrator, and Accounts Payable Clerk. Upon completion, you’ll also have the option to move onto other AAT qualifications with exemptions.

Build your accounting knowledge

AAT Diploma in Accounting - Level 3

This qualification covers a range of essential and higher-level accounting techniques and disciplines. Level 3 builds on the knowledge gained at Level 2. If you work in accounts or have studied accountancy before, you may be able to start at this level.

You’ll learn how to prepare final accounts for Sole Traders and Partnership as well as dealing with VAT returns for businesses. You will also learn various accounting techniques a management accountant requires, an understanding of business awareness and ethical practices for accountants. After completing this level, job options include Finance Officer, Assistant Accountant and Advanced Bookkeeper. Alternatively you may continue your study onto AAT Level 4.

Take excellence to a new level

AAT Diploma in Professional Accounting - Level 4

This is the top AAT level and will teach you more complex accounting theory, and also lets you choose two specialist subjects. You’ll learn about budgeting, management accounting, preparing financial statements, recommending accounting systems strategies, tax and presenting complex management accounting reports.

If you successfully complete this qualification you can apply for AAT full membership (MAAT), and if you’re thinking of starting your own practice you’ll be able to apply to become an AAT Licensed Accountant or Bookkeeper. Other job options will include Forensic Accountant, Tax Manager, Accountancy Consultant and Finance Analyst – these are just a few among many options.
