At Babington, we are often asked the question, “what is AAT Level 2 equivalent to?” In this post, I’ll explain how level 2, as well as the following levels, compare with other national qualifications.

AAT Level 2

AAT Level 2 is the starting point. This level provides a fundamental, basic understanding of the subject for those who are looking to work in accounts, or even those already in the industry. Level 2 covers topics from bookkeeping to trial balance, using both manual and computerised techniques.

The course is structured around nationally agreed standards of competence, while also meeting the needs of a diverse range of students from different circumstances and backgrounds.

To study AAT Level 2, you don’t need any formal qualifications. The course offers a fantastic first step on your journey towards becoming a qualified accountant.

So, what is AAT Level 2 equivalent to? While it is a qualification in its own right, it is equivalent to GCSE grade A*-C level. Once you have achieved the Certificate level, you will be qualified for a range of roles. For example, you can start looking for work as an Accounts Assistant or Purchase/Sales Ledger Clerk.

Many learners, however, choose to further their opportunities by going on to AAT Level 3.

What can you do after AAT Level 2?

The AAT Level 3 Advanced Diploma is the intermediate level, and is the equivalent of 2 A Levels. Completion of AAT level 3 is equal to 160 UCAS points, and more numerous UK universities and higher education institutes offer exemptions to AAT professional members enrolling on accounting and finance related degrees.

When you complete AAT level 3, you have a few options:

  1. You can seek a role that reflects your newly gained skills, such as Accounting Assistant, Tax Assistant etc.
  2. Apply for a university place, or carry on doing the AAT Level 4, which is the final hurdle of the whole AAT course.

AAT Level 4 qualifies you as an Accounting Technician, and is equivalent to a higher diploma, or the first year of degree.

If you’re looking to reach this level, you can complete the three levels of AAT – 2, 3 and 4, in two years if you are really committed.

You can then become a full member of the AAT, and be entitled to use the letters “MAAT” after your name.

From here, you could go even further, and study with CIMA or ACCA. Because of the skills and knowledge you have already gained, you will receive generous exemptions from the first stages of each course. If you decide to stop at AAT qualified level, you could still secure a senior accounts position and (depending on where you live) could earn anything between £20 -30K per year.

In summary:

  1. AAT level 2 is equivalent to GCSEs
  2. AAT level 3 is equivalent to 2 A Levels
  3. AAT level 4 is equivalent to a Professional Diploma Level
