In a time of such huge change and upheaval in almost every sector and with so many challenges to face, doesn’t this seem unwise? Given that it’s never been harder to be effective in leading teams and individuals at any level, many are struggling to deal with the many people challenges, with building their teams, retaining their most talented people and achieving ever-increasing targets and goals. Imagine if we adopted the same approach to doctors, lawyers, dentists or pilots? How many of us would cheerfully get on a plane if we knew that the pilot was an enthusiastic amateur with some experience? Or sit in the dentist’s chair after finding out their qualifications were in carpentry not dentistry? It’s all rather odd
Many organizations have been doing something about this for some time, supporting their managers at the front-line, in middle-management roles and at senior levels to enable them to upgrade their skills, develop their capabilities and adopt the latest thinking as leaders. If you are in one of those organizations, then that’s great to hear.
But what if you’re not?
It stands to reason that those who constantly develop and upgrade their capabilities as a manager and leader will be at the front of the queue for promotions, for new roles and for the most interesting projects. With less than 25% of leaders qualified in the role, it means that those who have taken the chance to learn, grow and achieve their professional qualifications will probably have quite an advantage and be much in demand.
