What is a Hairdressing Apprenticeship?

Posted by: Jannike Post Date: 20th July 2015

A hairdressing apprenticeship is a mixture of on-the-job and off-the-job training that will give you the necessary knowledge and practical skills to build a successful career as a hair stylist.

The programme usually lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on your on-the-job training and personal ability.

The apprenticeship is designed to ensure you gain the professional skills and experience to succeed, as well as functional skills in maths and English.

What does a hairdressing apprenticeship involve?

There are multiple levels of apprenticeships for hairdressers, and the duties these involve change depending on which level you are currently at.

Most apprentice hairdressers start out as salon juniors, and begin working as part of the team by conducting typical salon duties including booking in clients, meeting and greeting clients and helping to keep the salon clean.

While helping the senior staff as an apprentice, you will train to become a junior stylist.

Taking on more responsibility

As you progress, your duties will increase, and you’ll begin to take on more responsibility around the salon.

At this point, you can expect to carry out tasks such as shampooing and preparing clients’ hair for treatments, mixing together chemicals such as dyes and bleaches to be applied to hair, drying hair, and cleaning professional equipment.

Progressing towards the end of your apprenticeship, you will take on responsibilities closer to those taken on by qualified professionals. As well as continuing to observe senior staff and develop new skills, you could take on exciting tasks like cutting and styling hair yourself.

Becoming a well-rounded professional

While learning the variety of skills required for fulfilling the role of hairdresser, you will also study maths and English. This is essential to becoming a great hair stylist, as you will need to quickly calculate costs, communicate well with customers, and plenty more.

You will also develop a range of other skills fundamental to salon success. These include teamwork and communication, which are necessary to working in a salon environment and ensuring that clients’ needs are understood.

The sky’s the limit

Training to become a hair stylist can take a few years to complete, depending on what level of qualification you want to reach, so you should be committed.

Once qualified, you’ll be equipped to build a successful career in hairdressing, going as far as you like. You could end up working in one of a huge range of settings, from hairstyling for celebrities to working on cruise ships. You could even start your own business, deciding when and where you work.
