Want to know why apprenticeships are a fantastic route into the property industry? Look no further than Barnard Marcus estate agency.
Their Covent Garden branch currently has 3 motivated apprentices, all progressing on different apprenticeship levels – even through to senior and management positions.
The apprentices stated that the clear progression opportunities and chances to grow with qualifications were key reasons why the apprenticeship was an ideal choice for them. The trust and guidance of their manager has also played a key role in their development.
Making an impact
When asked about his apprentices, branch manager Barry Marner said: ‘Every one of our apprentices has made a significant impact.
‘Benjamin started with us as a level 2 apprentice, and came out of the apprenticeship very motivated, moving from apprentice sales negotiator to senior negotiator. He has also developed key leadership skills through our Rising Stars programme, and is now an assistant manager.
‘Another former apprentice, Daniel, has added real value as a lettings negotiator, and is now in a permanent position. Likewise with Georgina, who has adapted very well on her admin apprenticeship and is keen to progress even further.
‘I see no reason for other employers not to invest in their apprentices. These enthusiastic young people are willing to learn. With the right coaching and mentoring, they can add long-lasting value to any business.’
From apprenticeship to management
When asked why he chose an apprenticeship in the first place, Benjamin said:
‘I was looking around at my friends coming out of university with degrees, but they were still waiting for better job opportunities. At university, you can sit around for years waiting to become qualified. I preferred to get stuck in and start learning. It’s paying off as now I’ve stepped up to a role as assistant manager.
‘A key reason to start the apprenticeship was to really understand the property market and my sales role within it. I feel that the mix of theory and practice is what helped me hit new heights. The skills I’ve gained have no doubt given me longevity in the industry.
‘Of course, doing both a qualification and the job at the same time can be a real challenge. But the challenges of working on the apprenticeship have truly upgraded my character.’
The ideal start
Entering a new workplace can be tough for any young apprentice. But Georgina says that the support of her colleagues alongside Babington’s tutors helped her settle in, complete her apprenticeship, and hold down a permanent role as a branch administrator.
‘My tutor, Eric, was really supportive. The qualification was tricky and I had quite a few questions, but he always guided me through each step.
‘Overall, the administration apprenticeship has really helped me understand my day to day tasks. At first, I was struggling with the qualification coursework, but then I found that the work experience helped me answer the questions.
‘Putting in the time, research, and getting to know everybody in the businesses has really helped me understand my role better. Now I look forward to progressing to the next apprenticeship level.
On why she chose an apprenticeship over college, Georgina said: ‘I didn’t enjoy the ‘classroom’ learning at school, and wasn’t going to enjoy it at college either! The best route for me was working while gaining the qualifications. This is what helped me realise that the apprenticeship was the right pathway for me.’
