For National Apprenticeship Week we wanted to find out how our apprentices are helping their employers during this difficult time.
Daniel Humphrey hired a Business Administration apprentice for DRC Locums.
What apprenticeships are you utilising at your business? What day to day tasks do they do?
Business Administration. Supporting our senior recruitment consultant’s into growing their internal business of candidates.
Are you considering using apprenticeships for other areas of your business? If so, why?
Yes, they have proved to be hardworking, reliable and a huge benefit to the team.
How has the training helped build your business for years to come?
We are impressed with the apprentices we have had, that we have identified them as the future to help grow the business in each area of the department that we have. We have also let them learn from the best we have here in the company.
How has COVID-19 effected your apprenticeship experience?
Being Key Workers, the only effect that has been apparent is when the apprentice themselves have had to self isolate for whatever reason, which just had impact on their learning, training and growth. Other than that they have safely and happily worked alongside the team in the office to continue to make a difference.
What return on investment are you seeing as a result of employing apprentices during this time? How is investing in your workforce helping you retain talent?
The return will come with time, this is certain as long as we do our part correctly in supporting the apprentice. We have already seen a return early on with the workload and support the current apprentices have been able to provide their line managers to in turn grow their business. The scheme with apprentices has helped drive other team members to earn the right to have their own apprentice work under them, which we are moving forward with too.
What progression opportunities do your apprentices have?
Each apprentice has the opportunity if successful to get a job at the end of the apprenticeship and become their own recruitment consultant and the opportunities thereafter are endless to move up the recruitment ranks.
How have apprenticeships helped your business to adapt, grow and build during a difficult year due to COVID-19?
The mentality of having an opportunity if you find the right apprentices, gives a huge buzz and focus to the rest of the team. A refreshing drive and attitude and determination from the apprentices. It has helped to push morale and drive productivity within the team/ business. They have helped with growing pressures and workload for the team here.
Would you consider apprenticeships to other businesses? If so, why?
Yes, if used correctly, if treated the same as all of your staff members and if fully supported, there is really only the opportunity to make it work, succeed and help grow your business.
Do you have any other comments to support National Apprenticeship Week 2021?
Apprenticeships are a fantastic way to give someone with the right drive, determination and attitude a fantastic opportunity to start off their career. From my experience, they have all proved to be a success and a great asset, and you get a huge sense of pride when you see your apprentices succeed and start their career off with your help and support, and in between all of that, they have proved to be a great way of sourcing successful and loyal employees.
