Emily has recently completed our level 4 AAT professional course with a distinction! She completed the qualification as a distance learner at Babington Group, whilst receiving the continual support of our expert tutors.
Emily has been working for a small firm of accountants in Rotherham since December 2016. She graduated from university with a degree in Law but decided she didn’t want to pursue a career in that area. Instead, she chose to take a job in accountancy but understood that she’d need to gain qualifications in the industry to improve her skills.
Why did you decide to complete an AAT qualification?
“My firm wanted me to try out AAT Level 4 before starting the ICAEW (The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) ACA qualification, to get used to training alongside working and to make sure I was still wanting to do the qualification when I got to the end of it! Which is what I plan to do next, hopefully starting in March.”
Why did you choose to go down the professional course route?
“I wanted to broaden my knowledge and feel comfortable talking to clients with the confidence that I know what I am talking about! Also, of course being ACA-qualified will eventually increase my salary prospects and hopefully make it a long-term career.”

What was your experience of taking the course?
“I enjoyed the course, which worked well for me because I am good at managing my own time and making myself do the work at home, so this form of studying probably wouldn’t suit someone who needs to be motivated to do work. I found the books easy to follow and they had good case studies as you went along (which I always tried to do without reading the answer), which was good to keep track of whether I was understanding it. Booking all the exams at the beginning would be a good idea to have deadlines to work towards. I intended to do an hour a night and more at the weekends, but that never ended up happening as I did an hour some nights and tried to do 3/4 hours on the weekend when I was nearing the end of a topic to get the exam booked in.”
How do you think the course has been of benefit to you?
“It has been a benefit to me because it has reinforced that I want to carry on and do the additional ICAEW qualification. The parts that I grasped quite easily confirmed that it is the right career path for me as it naturally suits my abilities and interests. Also, it is another qualification to add to my CV along with my degree. The course was also a benefit to see that I can motivate myself to work, and over the years of studying GCSEs, A-Levels and a degree I have finally learned how best to revise for me!”
