What will I be doing?

Apprenticeships are a traditional way to train barbers and will give you the chance to watch closely, practise, and learn from your experienced colleagues. You will get involved with practical work-based learning, and day leaves at a college or training centre to learn various barbering styles and techniques.

This apprenticeship will also give you the opportunity to develop your soft skills such as communication – both within a team and with clients.

You will be working in a barber’s shop to learn about styles, techniques, and customer service skills first hand. Some of the mandatory tasks of this qualification include:

  • Advising and consulting with clients
  • Treating the hair and scalp – including shampoo and conditioning
  • Cutting and detailing men’s hair and facial hair using basic techniques
  • Drying and styling men’s hair
  • Colouring and lightening men’s hair

You can also expand your skillset by learning additional modules such as perming and relaxing men’s hair, fulfilling reception duties, and assisting with shaving.

What qualifications will I achieve?

You will achieve a level 2 NVQ in Barbering and if required, level 2 Functional Skills in Mathematics and English.

The level 2 certificate in Barbering will supply you with a great foundation of knowledge, which you can then expand with the level 3 apprenticeship in Barbering.

What are the entry requirements?

A Barbering Apprenticeship is for anyone who’s serious about a barbering career.

You can join Barbering Level 2 without any formal qualifications. However, it is beneficial if you are of a friendly nature with a good sense of humour to interact with customers.

What can I do afterwards?

The career of a barber can lead to working in a variety of places, from salons, spas and hospitals to hotels and holiday resorts. After completion of level 2, learners can undertake a role as a junior barber.

You might also wish to improve upon the skills you have already developed and move on to Barbering Level 3.
