Introduction to the course
Our Level 4 accounting programme combines dedicated workplace mentoring, on-the-job experience, access to high-quality online resources alongside our outstanding blended delivery model.
All 3 of these routes (CIMA, ACCA and AAT) build the necessary skills, knowledge and behaviours required to become a highly skilled Professional Accounting Technician.
Learner outcomes
During the programme, apprentices will cover topics developing their ability to create, verify and review accurate and timely financial information. A Professional Accounting Technician will apply the relevant ethical, professional and accounting standards in the preparation and drafting of financial statements. Depending on their role your employee will also learn specialist knowledge in other aspects of accounting, for example, management or tax accounting.
Assessment
Apprentices must achieve Level 2 English and Mathematics before completing the programme. Following completion of the required units (which differ per routeway), learners will progress to the End-Point Assessment in which the knowledge and evidence learners have gathered will be assessed against the programme criteria.
The End-Point Assessment is different for each routeway, but all will involve a range of assessment tools including:
AAT:
- A 3-hour synoptic assessment
- A reflective discussion or written statement supported by a portfolio of evidence
ACCA/CIMA:
- A technical role simulation case study exam
- A reflective statement supported by a portfolio of evidence
A good fit for
Employees in accounting roles such as a Senior Bookkeeper, Finance Administrator or Accounts Payable Supervisor and those wishing to further develop their career in accountancy and become a fully qualified Accounting Technician.
Future job roles
- Senior Finance Officer
- Commercial Analyst
- Management Accountant

Apprentice or Employer?
What impressed me most about my level 2 studies was the way that most things I learned during the qualification linked to the work I was doing in the office. This really helped me to understand the role better, as I knew about everything that was happening behind the scenes. All my tutors have been exceptional teachers, and the fact that I have passed all my exams first time only proves this!
I’d recommend the AAT training through apprenticeship route to any young budding Accountant. With the support of my employer I was able to earn and learn at the same time rather than coming out of University with debt and no guarantee of a job at the end of it. The support of Babington has enabled me not only to complete my AAT qualifications but also to compete at prestigious events such as WorldSkillsUK.
During my AAT studies the Babington staff were really helpful. They were flexible with exam dates, and the tutors were really helpful in spending extra time with me if I didn’t understand things. It was particularly helpful that they had previously worked in business, so they gave me practical examples of when certain skills were used. Their genuine enthusiasm for the subject helped me realise that this is not just a job – it’s a career.
